[Help request] Knot for glass jar
« on: September 01, 2021, 07:52:52 PM »
Hello everyone. I have a knot request for the forum members, I hope this is the correct board.

tl;dr: I like to grow small plants ? ivy, aucuba, etc. ? in glass jars, glass jars filled with only water specifically. Like this:

Some jars are wide and short, so the plant cannot stand upright, but slanted. Is there a way to make an X on the mouth of the jar with a knot so the plant can rest on it? I will add a crudely edited image to

On the left you can see the ?problem? and on top-right the solution I am looking for. I think I could do this with an iron wire, but maybe there is an appropriate knot for the job.

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried the Jug Sling Knot?  https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=jug+sling+knot

Just make the carry loop smaller and tie the ends across the top to tension the short loop across the neck of the jar.

Happy knotting.

Depending on various factors (such as how much force
the plant will exert; on one's aesthetic appreciation of
a structure ...), there are various solutions.

A quite simple one is less about some particular knot
and just the overall structure :: set your plant-supporting
piece(s) in place and with a cord or maybe better a rubber
band (more frictive against the held support legs)
bind the support legs to the side of the top of the jar.

Your mention of wire sounds good in that wire --and I've
worked with some thin stuff meant as plant/flower supports--
can be shaped and hold the shape (e.g., one could twist a
small loop to surround the plant at mid-span of the jar,
fold the wire legs down on either side, and rubberband them
(or secure them w/cord made in some noose --e.g., joined
with a rolling hitch --which can be tightened/loosened).

Need a good 'home base'/stop grab or other starting point.
Crossing at the top with strings, or even wire is not the tricky point but rather the 'stop' function is.
.
Slick glass low friction so simple, more frictive wider rubber band as stated; as 'base' grip if trying to grab jar side/not involve bottom utility; then trap plant at top from that 'base' grab.
If sitting on table as shown, can sit on something in between to be grabbed by rope etc.
If hanging, or just want to sit on the crossed ropes the bottle sling is the standard as shown.

Circular netmaking might be useful here.  Tie three loops following the instructions.  Loops to be 1/2 diameter of the jar.
Join the 2 ends together to make a 4th loop and place over jar.  Bring he 2 ends around the jar rim and tie together.

circular netting

or tie a couple of these

I agree with the others that a jug sling [ABoK #2554] seems the best way to attach the cord to the jar neck. Below is what it looks like.  Then you have four cords to tie around the plant on the top (cutting the one loop if you tie the jug sling in a traditional way).  Pictured here is a suggestion for how you might tie the top around your plant.  {You could also attempt to tie a "doubled" jug sling in a rethreaded fashion at the top, but it is extremely difficult.}

I agree with the others that a jug sling [ABoK #2554] seems the best way to attach the cord to the jar neck. Below is what it looks like.  Then you have
...
... a grossly excessive use of cord missing the
point of the structure almost entirely!  Really,
this is trying to hammer one's known thing
into an unfitting hole.
