Nail Knot - as a standing loop
« on: July 13, 2020, 09:51:11 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I have quizzed my fellow anglers about this version of the ubiquitous Nail Knot with limited results: one asked why I didn't use a Bimini Twist and another 'old salt' claims that it can break when submitted to a sudden shock, yet others use the general Nail Knot to land some of the most powerful fish in the oceans.

The Nail Knot is much mentioned for its ability to join a fly line to a fishing line or, when two are used, as a line-to-line connection. If it is mentioned as a loop, it is usually cited as a means of tying a loop of monofil to the end of a fly line. My one-off test with monofil suggests that it holds exceptionally well but super line braid is my area of interest. Here, I suspect it will be a question of whether the tyer can lay down sufficient coils in cinching. I just wondered whether anyone had experience of using the knot as a standing end loop.

Also, I am curious to know whether this type of knot is classed as a 'knot' or as a 'binding'?

Phil
