A different way to tie off a coil of rope
« on: April 24, 2019, 08:43:45 PM »
I came up with this the other day when out in the field coiling some rope. I had just been whipping some ends and realized I might be able to use a similar approach to finishing off a coil. https://highgate.me/2W4Tvhh

Thoughts?

Good thinking beyond the box!

Yes, I've done this sort of thing, in various ways,
probably more often by just making the final U-turn
anticipating that it will become a nipping bight
and wrapping back up to it,
tucking out with either a slip-bight or pure tail.

One might also turn & wrap back up (towards the
top coil end) then tuck a bight through the coil,
twist it and *backflip* it around the coil top,
and so on.

Cheers,

My word-of-the-day. Thanks.

I saw this recently when I was looking for other ways. It worked fine, but even thought it may not be ideal for every situation, I like my quick release. I showed it to a friend who's a climber and he's going to adopt it.
