Good thinking beyond the box!
Yes, I've done this sort of thing, in various ways,
probably more often by just making the final U-turn
anticipating that it will become a nipping bight
and wrapping back up to it,
tucking out with either a slip-bight or pure tail.
One might also turn & wrap back up (towards the
top coil end) then tuck a bight through the coil,
twist it and *backflip* it around the coil top,
and so on.
