knot around solid round objects
« on: March 11, 2019, 01:34:00 PM »
Hi Everybody
I'm looking for some ideas on this one.  I have some challenge coins that I would like to tie some sort of knot around the edge of, to hold the coin - otherwise it just sits in inopportune places.  Ideally, I'd be able to pop one coin out, and swap for another, but, no reason I couldn't just make multiple pendants out of them.  Also, I have a mini cooper, with one of those UFO-looking keys.  The little silver ring around the edge has disappeared, so, I'm looking for something to replace it - only hitch (HA) there is, the key/fob still needs to fit in the slot in the dash of the car, so, the knot would have to be fairly flush.  Thinking something like a star grommet, tied with very small stuff.  That should lie in the groove the old chrome thing used to sit in, so, that shouldn't be too wonky, but, I need to make sure there is enough substance there that it doesn't just look like I simply tied a piece of fishing twine around it, half-heartedly.

Open to thoughts and suggestions - fire away!

I suspect in any setting where you could pop the coin out for changing would be a setting where the coin might pop out when you least expect it.  I'm just pessimistic that way.   :)

Here's a few instructions sets with the same technique: with 2 holding cords, make a larks head chain on alternating cords, wrap around the edge of your coin, cinch tight the holding cords.  Some have better pictures than others.

This is a different technique (and the frame doesn't have to be heart-shaped  :D )

There is also a frame of doubled cord, but the channel forming knot is more like a reversed crochet???  It's hard to describe.  Right now as I post, the site is not responding, but I think it's just a temporary outage... Update: checking 4 days later the site is fine.

I have used the Spanish Ring Knot to hold coins.  This example is tied in gutted paracord.

Thanks!
I'm in the midst of knitting a pair of socks, have a hammock chair macrame project up next. Hopefully I will get to this in the near future, though.
