2 New(?) stopper knots.
« on: February 11, 2019, 12:03:24 AM »
I was trying to tie a stopper knot and then write down the directions for tying it. It really used a different part of my brain than I was used to.

The first one I call the scarab knot, because it looks like a scarab when tied. ( figure8mc2f )

The second I call the cork knot, because it looks like a cork. I made this one because when I was drawing the first one, it looked like it could be easily pulled through, so I changed the design. ( figure8mac2f )

How many hours does it take you to dress & set
these knots into working form?

For either one, by following the diagrams, less than 10 minutes.

The remark was rhetorical, pointing to a common
desiderata for such knots (and knots in general),
and that these knots are difficult to tie in any
efficient way.  --in contrast to a knot that can
be tied such that at various intermediate stages
one is setting the just-formed component hard
and able to finish the knot so that it's ready to go,
without tedious picking at strands and drawing
parts snug.

Which begs the question Why bother with then?

A few days ago I was looking at the anti/symmetry of the figure 8 knot and how it was related to the knot I designed. Last night I figured out how use it even further.

I need a mirrored version of the scarab knot.

So, once you tie the scarab knot, rotate it about the horizontal axis and then tie the mirrored scarab knot modification to the now upper loop.
Now you have a scarab and mirrored scarab in the same knot.(!)

I'm not sure of the use for this. I know I used the scarab for something in a real application.
