I want to tie the end of a piece of Paracord to the top VERTICAL section (a necessity) of an aluminum walking cane to form a "loop" to hang the cane around my wrist. (Please don't concentrate on the loop, just the appropriate knot.)

Requirements:
Permanent (must NEVER come untied).
Must not slip when pulled on from ANY direction.
Must NEVER loosen (will slip down the cane).
I don't care about the ability to untie it.

The constrictor knot is as close as I have come (and I have tried many!), but the minute I pull the long end of the cord in the wrong direction, the knot loosens and slips down the cane.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Good day KnotThatGood and welcome.

I have had best success with the Strangle knot for this purpose.
Here is a link to a good tutorial http://www.paracordguild.com/strangle-knot-tutorial/
Then just join the free ends with a bend of choice (aesthetics?).

Also, a bit of something like friction tape under the knot will help immensely. Or, depending on the cord used, one could coat it with thinned wood glue.

Hope this leads you to success.

Thanks SS369 for the suggestion. It works much better than anything I've tried, but it still loosens when I pull on it from different directions. I think I will try it with tape or glue, as suggested.
Thanks again,

It takes a little skill to draw up neatly, but you may try a relative of the Constrictor called the Boa Knot:

Alternately, you could try multiple turns (wraps, maybe 4-8) around the cane finished with a Gnat Hitch:

You'd then just work on ratcheting it up as tight as possible.  It has the advantage of being easily reversible if the need arises.

I think a Strangle Knot might need additional outer coils (like a whipping) to get enough grip.

I would suggest the tackle clamp hitch. If you want a permanent knot that won't slide, I can't think of anything that would do it better.

Hi KnotThatGood, yes, the perennial challenge.

Have you considered plaiting a simple Turks head?  Paracord is nice and stretchy, so you can tension it up for a ferocious grip, especially if you seat it on a bit of tape or rubber to let the paracord  bed down on the unyielding aluminium.

The one shown is 3 x 7, but you can double it up easily.

Thanks for the replies (and if anyone else has more suggestions, they would be appreciated). I have a small emergency that pulled me away from the computer and will again after I finish typing this, but I WILL be back.
Thank you,

I think I would go with a constrictor knot but with 3 overwraps rather than one - needs tightening carefully but grips about as tightly as any friction hitch can. Certainly adding a base layer of friction tape will help whatever knot is used. Best of luck!

I want to tie the end of a piece of Paracord
to the top VERTICAL section (a necessity) of an aluminum walking cane
to form a "loop" to hang the cane around my wrist.
(Please don't concentrate on the loop, just the appropriate knot.)

Requirements:
Permanent (must NEVER come untied).
Must not slip when pulled on from ANY direction.
Must NEVER loosen (will slip down the cane).
I don't care about the ability to untie it.

But I think that we need to understand both the cane
and the nature of the loop to be implemented
in order to address this rope problem wisely.

E.g., how would a structure that was tied at the
top of the cane and a hand-length or so down
from the top, with material making a "loop"
between these anchor into which the hand
would got, to grip the cane but also be supported
by the "loop"/cordage?
.
.
.
I'm thinking of trying to employ an upside-down
barrel hitch --that overhand knot opened in its spine
to surround a cylindrical object and run under its
bottom (for the cane, upside-down = over the top)
and offer two ends on opposite sides (for further
knotting) !?
Such a structure would prevent any downwards slippage,
so long as the across-the-cane-top part stayed put
--possibly a challenge to be addressed with further
knotting.
But, now, "any direction" allows upward pulls!

Note that the constrictor can be used in conjunction
with other structures, and its locking knotting can be
incorporated in others --e.g., the rolling hitch which
is after all a clove h. with an extra turn, can be finished
constrictor-wise.

I WILL be back.

And when you come back, I hope to hear that you used Derek's idea, that of a Turk's head, for that stylish nautical look. If you want it to be really secure and permanent once it's good and tight, you can impregnate it with some shellac (or transparent nail polish). Maybe you had better dilute it with some kind of thinner/nail polish remover to get it to penetrate all the way to the metal.

Hi Twine,  I have to admit to a slight 'cheat' when mounting a Turks Head on a slick shaft if there is no opportunity to utilise a retaining shoulder.  I run a narrow stripe of Evostick around the shaft (narrower than the TH) and let it dry completely.  Then I slip the TH into place and dress it down tight.  My brother though, tells me that he sets a strip of double sided adhesive onto the shaft and beds the TH down onto it, the advantage is that there is no waiting time for drying.

By the way, I love the quote on your strapline.  It reflects the ethos I follow for knot tying.

Hi there

My solution would probably to tie two knots. I'd tie a loop with a nice knife lanyard knot (double if you want) and then tie it down with a turks head (or any other friction knot of your choice) on the object so that the lanyard knot sticks out below as a stopper. That way it cannot be pulled out and by clamping down on it with a friction knot, it might give it the extra friction to not skid up or down, regardless in which direction you pull. I also think it would look very decorative.

Greetings
