Multiple Figure 8+, or Windy?s Windy Knot?
« on: July 27, 2018, 01:01:06 AM »
Greetings and salutations.

I?ve evolved this knot from the Multiple Figure 8, and am wondering if it already exists. In the absence of a better name I?ve been calling it the Multiple Figure 8+.

Instead of the usual Multi Fig 8 in which single turns are taken around alternate legs, I make one turn around one of the legs, then TWO turns round the other. Repeat.

When desired length has been reached, pulling the cord with the single hitches forces the knot to curl into a gorgeous spiral. The extra turns on the outer leg fill out the curve.

Thanks for any help!

Greetings windychien!

Thank you for posting this knot structure.

Your presentation is actually a 'noose' structure.

In other words, when load is applied, it will cinch up tight.

The 'eye' (which some people call a 'loop') is not fixed.
For example, a #1010 common Bowline has a fixed 'eye' (ie, it does not cinch tight - it retains its size).

Is it intended for fishing line to attach a hook?
Or is this purely a decorative creative (ie for decorative purposes only)?

Out of interest, you might like this link: https://www.reddit.com/r/knots/comments/8gz6m6/multiple_figure_8_knot_how_to_tie_multiple_figure/
(Although this is presented as a 'stopper knot' and not a fixed eye knot or a 'noose').

The author in the video also refers to a great knot book by Cyrus Day (it is a good book).
Also look closely at photo 10B at 5:00 minutes elapsed time. This could be transformed into a noose similar to yours.

Others will chime in soon to confirm if your presentation is 'new' or 'original'.
Would be helpful if we knew if this creation has an intended application or if it is purely decorative.

Many thanks Agent Smith.

I had originally intended the knot to make a Multi Fig 8 necklace that curves (see website, have added necklace photo http://windychien.com/igktq) and in doing so, noticed that the larger curve needed filling out, which is why second turns were added. After that success, further investigation suggested that extending the knot would cause it to spiral back in itself.

Not intended to be functional. I?m an artist.

PS Agnet Smith, does it actually qualify as a noose if its intended shape is the pulled up tight, curving shape? The straight version (first photo on webpage is intended only show the knot?s structure, not its final shape.)

It's sort of a standard wire wrapping/weaving technique.

See here for a wire tutorial http://perfectlytwistedjewelry.blogspot.com/2012/11/wire-weaving-basic-2-to-1-loop.html?m=1

PS Agnet Smith, does it actually qualify as a noose ...
No more than does Ashley's (mis-named "Oysterman's") stopper.
From which one can infer a formula for making a stopper
--to wit : make a noose and lock it on its own tail!

Practicality is another matter.
