Interlocking figure eight flat knot
« on: December 22, 2017, 08:45:21 PM »
Hi folks,

I came up with this one a few years ago while messing around with decorative flat knots to pass the time on a plane.  It would be great to know if it's original or not.

(I'm trying to attach the picture of it now; hopefully it works.)

I first tied it by weaving the working end, but I later realized you could tie it much more easily by creating two figure eight knots in one line, overlaying them, pulling the loop ends through, and then pulling the rope ends through the loop ends.  I know that sounds really unintelligible, so I'm also going to post a reply with a picture of the steps.

What do you think - is it old or new?  If it's old, does anyone know its name?

Thanks!

-E

eruss,
I am not familiar with decoration knot, I am not sure is old or new, I remember I have seen one that quite similar to your,
it call  "How to Make a Bumblebee Knot by TIAT".

Oh that's a cool knot!  It looks like the general silhouette of that knot is pretty similar to mine, but it's definitely constructed differently.

If you trace outward on both sides from the middle of the bumblebee knot (the top of the middle loop), you can see that the bumblebee knot traces in a mirror image around the center.  If you trace outward on both sides from the middle of my knot (marked with a bit of tissue in the pictures of tying steps), you can see that my knot has rotational symmetry, but not reflective symmetry like the bumblebee knot has.

Still, I'm glad I got to learn that one; thanks for posting it!

Although this particular forum's title might suggest
your post ... , it might find a better response from
those who perhaps only read the decorative-knots
(sub) forum!?

Thanks for the tip!  I'll post there, too.
