Speir Knot --another Boating mag. mystery!?

Boating[no!] 1962, is it?, gives another military-based *new*
knot.  I'm happy to see this, as it's a more stable "Speir"
than what I've seen elsewhere (even in some Army? manual).

[edit to add]
Popular Boating, May 1962, Volume 11, Number 5
    pp. 182 & 3 (narrow column)

... which appears --in title & vol./no.-- to be a different
magazine (much resembling, & also Ziff-Davis) than
"Boating" sans "Popular' !?
--in which "The Forgotten Zeppelin Knot" article appears
at p.87 of the March '76 (+14years to above) issue,
>> [sic] March 1976, Vol.39, No.3

11 + 14 = 25, not 39, and ... .

As an update to this vibrant thread (  ::)  ),
let me note that one can find evidence
of the actual U.S. Army use of this knot
--well, rather, of a cheap variant of it--
on-line in some Army field manual.

To my remark about "cheap variant",
what is shown in the aforementioned manual
is a knot w/a full twist fewer than what the
Popular Boating article presents; in my judgement,
that brevity comes at a cost of stability --prefer
the original!

"Prefer the original!"

Whoa!  I should admit that in carefully following
the Popular Boating article's tying guidance (images,
much), I've arrived at various results; the knot doesn't
so readily dress itself and draw up reliably.  But the
brief version that seems to be the later result of whatever
Col. Speir began is not so stable, and needs to be used
with care; whereas some results of the more involved
knot are good.
