Please help with this spherical knot
« on: August 01, 2015, 04:21:40 PM »
Hi,

I've seen this tieback on the internet, have got a number of knot books at hand but I cannot get the same result as in the picture, I've tried a 4-pass 3-lead 4-bight turk's head following this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNS43htgqMA) but what I made is different from the tieback above, here is mine. I also tried a doubled Chinese button knot, but again, it's not the same... I'm a novice but if anyone could give a hint on what type of knot this is and how many leads and bights there are (if it's a turk's head, I guess there is an expansion too?), I think I could make one with the help of the books I have.
Many thanks in advance!

To my eyes, it looks a lot like this

or

A walkthru for how to register with zhongguojie.org (it's free and well worth it):

Thank you very much for your reply. After comparing your suggestion with the picture I finally understood what is the difference - the direction of the bights :)
Further searching I found a flat mat with a thump knot, I made it and tightened it into a ball (not that accurately though). Looks like that's it. Though I'm going to try tomorrow a 5-bight 4-lead turk's head, as the 3-lead one again looked much like this when turned upside down!

Hello Omphaloskepsis.

I am wondering if what you are seeking is the Double Monkey Fist knot. (ABoK# 2206)

Have a look at the tutorials here http://pineappleknotstutorials.over-blog.org/article-monkey-fist-90253646.html

There are plenty of "globe" knots around and or Pineapple knots should you care to upgrade.  ;)

Hello,
My earliest guess was the monkey fist knot but it's different from my picture's one. I had stopped at the turk's head knot but I knew something was wrong as the bights at the bottom of the ball looked fewer than at the top so was wondering if there was a way to make the number of inside bights fewer than the outside ones (which is not possible in the turk's mat). As I discovered the thump mat (ABOK #2360) with its 3-inside bights and 6-outside bights, I tightened it into a ball and it worked! Here is a video from youtube with clear instructions in case someone likes to make their one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CklSFklW8yk
Thank you!
