Hi Rosco,
I don't know if you have access to an Ashley Book of Knots but before I tied the sling with hooks I was using ABOK #2159, which grows from a clove hitch but is pretty stable.  Of course it uses up 25' of line which may not be good for your rig.  I just tied the 2159 and put a bowline in the lifting legs and with a bit of adjustment up came the wood.  The same knot shows up as ABOK 201.  You have sent me on a search for my well wheel.  When Alice and I built our cabin I used tackle with an advantage (not just a single shiv) as Alice is outweighed by most materials and I was more often up and not on the ground.  edit  10/19 (WW) to "TW" must be around here someplace. ???
