a tight reef knot
« on: November 27, 2013, 04:00:24 AM »
This is my perennial dilemma:

I am tying a piece of rope around a bulk object, like box
The rope is only 10in longer than box's perimeter.
what i do now
1. I tie a half of the reef knot
2. shout loudly Darling , i need your help
3, complete the second half of the reef knot, while my wife holding the first half

is there better way to do this?
if i do it alone, i cannot make it tight

Hi  alexten..... and welcome.

Perhaps a different knot would be a better choice. Give a look at the packer's knot http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packer%27s_knot
There are other variations to this also worth looking into. I believe that this will help given your stated criteria.

You can hitch one end around the other with
a rolling hitch or even clove hitch (something
giving you temporary purchase) and pull the
line tight, then tie off in whatever way.

SS369's recommendation is spot on.

Adjustable grip hitch. This knot is pretty much my go to knot.
