alternate yosimite finish?
« on: July 21, 2013, 04:35:43 AM »
I think I came up with this finish to the bowline that is similar to the yosimite with an extra twist. I use it as life support when recreational tree climbing. It feels more stable than a yosimite finish. I haven't named it or anything like that since I havent confirmed that it doesnt already exist. Let me know your thoughts.

Some downfalls of the Yosemite Bowline are less-than-stellar security and a sloppy appearance that hinders inspection.  While your variant doesn't help the latter issue, it does appear to noticeably improve the security of the knot when subjected to slack motion.

It's possible that this may be somewhere in the forum, but it doesn't immediately come to mind for me.

I don't like that the strand of the collar around the eye leg of the Tail side has to make a sharp 315 degrees U turn around one rope diameter. With stiff ropes, there would remain some eye wide open there...

For the best "Yosemite" bowline variation we have, see the attached pictures.

I appreciate the suggestions of other knots, but is my version a new version?

My question still stands because the suggestions that have been made are of knots where the standing end and tail are opposing. The reason I posted it as a yosimite alternative is because it is a knot where both ends go the same direction. I think it is an improvement over yosimite because it creates what I believe is called additional nipping turn in the knot.    I don't have the vast experience in knot tying that is available here that is why I came here for your thoughts.  I have not seen it tied this way have you?

... posted it as a yosimite alternative
Nice change to the "a"-word --too often "alternate"
is wrongly substituted for the proper "alternative"
(damn those highway folks!)--, but do note 'yosemite'
(which I play-remember as "yo-see-mite"  ;) ).

Is it "new"?  Hmmm, I can imagine that many folks might've
given the version a fling; I don't recall seeing that anyone
has published it, though.  --for whatever that's worth.

I concur in X1's observation about the hard turn,
esp. for firm ropes, which seem to be the ones usually
subjected to bowline securings.  There are many
preferable ways to secure the knot.
