What does "sport" in ABOK mean?
« on: February 20, 2013, 11:59:20 AM »
Hello all!

I read in ABOK #3680 that clothesbag lanyard is a sport. I don't understand what does it mean.

In dictionaries i found it means "game, athletic competition, athletic activities collectively; recreation; jest; mockery; fair or sportsmanlike person". But it appears not fits in this context in ABOK.

Maybe anyone will explain another meanings of this word in english?

Regards.

You should probably include the text from ABOK.

Sport does have other meanings than the common one  - for example it's sometimes used to describe a non-typical example of something (like an animal with two different-colored eyes).

Interesting point!

I'm inclined to interpret this uncommon use to mean
"departure from the norm", but it's unclear.  The full
sentence of Ashley's is
"This clothesbag lanyard is a sport.  It has but two legs ... ."
And this entry comes amidst other such constructs that
have many legs, each secured to its own bag eyelet.

.:.  So, I think that Ashley means to note that #3680 is unusual.

Thank you, Dan. Interesting suggestion and i think it is reasonable because it is only clothesbag on this page (576) with two legs.

In horticulture a "sport" is a genetic offspring or variation of a parent plant.  I think he is refering to sport in this way
