Change from Square (reef) knot to Fisherman's

Gerry Jacobs from the antipodes has asked me to post the attached picture for him.  He claims that this is a new knot or a new way of making a knot.  Can anyone support or deny this claim on this Forum and, if in denial, please let us know where this method has been previously published?

This method was published in KM114 (March 2012) pages 32 et seq. As a trick it has some interest but I can't imagine using it in practice.
