Eye splicing - how to improve appearance
« on: July 10, 2016, 07:08:00 PM »
Hi.

I know how to splice a 3 stranded rope to an eye. The problem I have is that the "meeting point" looks more like a fork - the working end looks like a fork business end.

Can you guys that have more experience in splicing give me some tip on how to improve the appearance of the splice meeting point?

Thanks in advance
I'm aiming for knots that is secure, AND that is easy to untie.

There are various ways to bring the tail's strands into the
SPart, so play around with that.  It might entail some
deviation from strict alternation of things in order to get
the more un-fork-like joint.  (Or you could just wrap some
whipping/parceling over it all.   ;)  )

For smoother-looking splices, the "sailor's" wrapping
--i.e. where one strand wraps around one other, only,
not over/under/over ... the other three-- works well,
and then the per-strand taper --where one strand stops
at N tucks, then next at N+1, and the 3rd at N+1--
gives a nice tapering w/o bother of trinning yarns from
strands.

Beyond this, is it the "Flemmish eye" in which one opens
ALL of the eye part into strands with one going around
the opposite direction to the other two, and then being
re-set into the lay (into the groove it had occupied)
and then you have a new set of tucking to consider.

Have fun!

(for further fun, one can try using separate material
for the eye, splicing thus this short extra piece into
the end of the main rope (maybe to get something
flatter or rougher-tougher to do eye work,
or just to have an excuse to further rope play!
(E.g., I've had found-ropes where much of one end
has become unlaid and doesn't re-lay agreeably,
so I've *braided* that in the over-under back'n'forth
one might do pony tails e.g., which will give a more
*flat* eye, kinder against one's hand (like webbing),
and ... then comes tucking.  In THIS case, it's more
the departure of the eye strands from the SPart that
raises issues, IMO, than the resultant tucking back
into the lay.)

Maybe I should tell people, that the page is mine.

There's a hitch, presently, and I hope that someone might save the page to live on, as there is at least some worthwhile information in it.
I will emigrate within a rather short time, by the end of this month. This will imply, that my website goes down, as I will end the contract with the provider.

So if anyone could put those knot-related items on another site, it would be a Good Thing. I hereby declare it Public Domain. As can be seen on the page, there are copyright notices on the printout versions. I am Urban Domeij, Liding?, but as said, I will no longer live here, and I cannot keep that webpage, as I have sold my apartment that's connected to comhem.se.

And in Cuba, I won't have any internet connection, so I couldn't at present time save the page for the future.

Inkanyezi, Thank you for sharing your very eloquent instruction pages.
I have saved each one as a Web Archive for my personal off-line use. I hope others who have knotting web pages will post them with attribution to you.

I have it saved locally. Further down the line, I'll be proud to host it for public use.
