String for Holding Awkward Small Items
« on: July 09, 2012, 08:20:38 PM »
I'm looking to buy some tiny, but relatively strong, string. I have several small items that I want to put on a keyring/lanyard. Unfortunately, there is no hole for a keyring/lanyard. My solution is to tie a binder knot to each little item by using small string. I have done this with other items, but now I have run out string. I got the other string from random stuff lying around, but I want a more consistent way to get the string.  For reference, jute twine is too big, too clumsy, and too organic if you know what I mean.

Here is an example small item on which I want to use the method described above:

EDIT: I suppose I could open up my paracord and use the strands inside, but that seems like a waste. Maybe there are better solutions than what I propose with the binder. Ideas are welcome.

Maybe kite string or mason's line.

Venetian blind cord may just be the ticket. Comes in nice colors as well.

Thank you for the info. One of the suggestions should work. I feel lame for not thinking of what you guys suggested.

Thanks, I read that page you linked. I still would have started this thread after seeing that info. From the links on that thread, I can't tell what fits my needs, which are quite specialized. My knowledge on this subject is limited, sorry.

I wasn't going to post in this thread as what we have in the UK may not be available in the US but one of the people from R&W Rope is an IGKT member who comes over here for the AGM. And our membership secretary brings back some "handy hundreds" when he visits the US and sells them here - this is polyester (dacron) cord and for what you want I would think it's excellent - I use it for all sorts from dragonfly brooches to hanging things up. Recommended.

I use waxed whipping twine (Dacron / Polyester) - Marlow Rope makes the twine I use - should be available from any marine supply store - usually in the sailing dept.  Available in several colors and sizes.  Also available in Spectra and other materials.  I have used the whipping twine with a double constrictor knot(s) to hold lanyards on several flashlights.

This is a link to the display at my local supplier: http://www.fisheriessupply.com/marlow-whipping-twine

I think Dental Floss is mostly nylon - the smallest whipping twine is larger than the dental floss - the dental floss is I think more suited to sewing - it the object you are tying around was small the dental floss might work - I use the # 4 whipping twine on things as small as a pencil
