Modified Cow Hitch
« on: June 10, 2012, 08:44:39 PM »
I really like the cow hitch (ABOK #1673), but the hitch seems to slip and not very snug. I wanted a variation of the cow hitch that was snugger and more secure than the 1673. Well, I came up with the knot in the attached photo's. The knot is so simple it must be documented somewhere, but the closest I could find in my Ashley book was ABOK # 1683 (snug hitch).
Notice in the last photo I am holding up a 25 lbs weight with no slippage, this hitch is useful to haul up tools or such.

So what do you think, am I a bonehead, or did I make a new hitch?

Hi Firebright,

It's on page 83 in my copy of Geoffrey Budworth's 'The Ultimate Encyclopaedia of Knots & Ropework' as a 'Cow Hitch Variant' or 'Piwich knot'.

Hi firebight,

no knotting hall of shame here.  ;)
But, there are penalties for not using the search function. ;D

The Cow hitch is a simple, good hitch that is easily untied, but has its limitations as you have found. You can do a Cow Hitch with a bowline type finish and it will not come undone and be easy enough to untie after a fairly substantial loading.

Here is a link to some interesting reading on variations of the Cow Hitch > http://igkt.net/sm/index.php?topic=2166.0

Also for your perusal roo's site has this. > http://notableknotindex.webs.com/bullhitch.html

Glad you are fiddling around, one of the best ways to learn. Keep it up!

Also known as a Bull Hitch and I've used it in the past on my small anchors for my boat. Now I'm mainly using Lobster Buoy Hitches for my anchors but there's a handful that work fairly well.

If one would prefer more specificity than ambiguity in knots
names, this might be a point to wonder at whether it should
be said that cow hitch = ring/girth hitch ; there could
be some sentiment to use the nominal differences to signify
respectively single-SPart vs. twin-SPart (tied w/a sling, say)
knots, here.  And, if so, to which stable will the bull go?
--likely after the cow!  Now we can use about introducing the
term "double" for this wrapping (once) of the collar, and ... .

The for the encouraging words SS369, I guess the prospect of a new knot discovery made me jump the gun. Well... thanks
