Manila Grommets
« on: February 09, 2006, 05:27:12 AM »

During off watch or not turning to many Deck division sailors would play "Quoits" We would make grommets out of 21 thread manila. We made a so called stake by cutting a foot long section of a swab handle and driving that into a hole in a round piece of wood.
Then we would play similar to horseshoes.

Sometimes we would use buckets and ki-yi brushes spaced a certain distance apart.

All these games were played on smooth, freshly holystoned teakwood decks.

Oh how I miss Battleship duty.
sailed the seas for many years,
what always brings me to salty tears,
Is when a retired sailor can't tie a knot,
An eye splice is nice but a back splice is not
