Has Everyone Already Seen This?
« on: September 25, 2005, 10:58:02 PM »
Howdy!

I just ran across The Project Gutenberg eBook, Knots, Splices and Rope Work, by A. Hyatt Verrill.

I didn't know if everyone here had already seen this, but it seemed share-worthy nonetheless.  If it's "old hat", well excuuuse me!  ;)

Thank you all, for everything.  As of 6/6/6, I have changed my password to a random string (which I forgot), thereby assuring that anyone posting as "Jimbo" in the future will NOT be me.  Good luck!!!

The website is the Gutenberg Project and I love the idea of publishing old books on line.

I've also looked through the knotting book. The drawings are not as clear as some I've seen. Not a great book, but pretty decent.

drjbrennan,
Be sure not to use Fig.9 though.
Most of these drawings - like many early knot books were "lifted" from Tom Bowling's - The Knot Book - in which the three plates of knots were originally from a French publication containing several engravers errors like this.

Hello, all:

The link is to a "straight" HTML page, no funky software needed.

For example, the uproarious (hilarious?  jocularious? humorous?):
is provided here by simply typing:
Code: [Select]

(NOTE: The "url" bit is just something I do to make it o-so-easy to just point (at the picture) & click.  The
Code: [Select]
is the needful part.)

(PS: For the graphically-challenged, the knot depicted is merely an OH with a flip of the main loop.  It's actually quite difficult (for me) to match the drawing using 5/8" 'anchor plait')

(PPS: There are a lot of errors in this book, oh yeah!  But imagine, if you will, the same "treatment" of ABOK...  That's what I'm talking about!  And all these Gutenberg guys seem to need is permission!)

Gosh, don't people tie the knots before they draw them?
Drawings of knots are superior to photos of knots as long as the drawings aren't from memory and are checked.
