How Do I Splice 3 Ropes Together?
« on: April 29, 2010, 07:50:26 AM »
I wonder if anyone can help me. I need to splice three manila ropes together in order to make a swing. I need to splice 2 ropes coming up from the swing with one rope coming down - as in this picture.

Can anyone explain how this has been done...or point me in the direction of a site that explains it?

Thanks!

There is only one splice in the photograph - To make this swing, splice a large eye in the end of the rope - mark the centre of the eye (furthest from the splice) put on a whipping each side of this then cut through the rope between the whipping. You now have the two ends to go through the swing seat.

This looks like the swing makers bought in the rope ready spliced and then cut and fitted it to the swing seat. It would seem to make more sense if making one to feed the rope through the seat and then splice it. The loops need to be the same size but any difference can be taken up when hanging the swing.

I'm afraid I'm still none the wiser!  ???  I'm a joiner by trade and know absolutely nothing about knots and ropes...I don't know what a whipping is  :-[  I have happilly made the oak part and carved the letters but when it comes to the rope I'm stuck!

I could just put four pieces of separate rope through, but I think the swing would be a bit uncontrollable and go off in all directions. If I can, I would rather do what has been done in this drawing.

Do you mean that the two ropes on each side have been joined together at that point?

My suggestion differs a little bit from your request. But this is how I would do it. One splice per side. A sheepshank, with the parts going through the loops, make it adjustable as well.

The net is full of instructions on how to splice.

Hi Wed,

Wouldn't you think we would have a great stock of video tutorials here at the IGKT and be able to point you right at one.  Sadly not so, at least not yet.  So you have to go hunting on the internet for them.  Here is a reasonable one.

Practice it a few times til you manage to get it nice and even, then pass the rope through the seat holes and then make the splice - it will be much more secure than the systems shown using two little thumb knots underneath the seat.

Please let us know how you get on.

Well, I just did a google search and came up with pages and pages of instructions for the eye splice and whipping. For your application, make the eye splice, then cut the rope in the middle of the eye. Shove the ends of the rope (now individual rope pieces, not an eye) through the holes in the swing seat and tie some kind of stopper knot in each end.

I hope this is somewhat helpful. ;D

Greetings!   :)

Firstly, let's try to look at your situation from a general perspective.
You say that you need to splice 3 ropes together to make a swing;
but do you really?
And --further-- do you really need or want to have a swing so
structured:  lines from each end of the swing seat rising up
to be fused into a single line anchored high?!  -- as contrasted
with the two lines remaining independent and each being
anchored!?   For the single-line structure is going to yield
much turning/twisting of the swinger, and not *sail straight*.
Normally, one wants to avoid such turning.  However, if your
high anchor is so sloped or somehow otherwise constrained
to preclude dual-line anchoring, well, you'll have to live w/that.

Now, to the point about a trio of ropes vs. one:  the structure
sketched by Fairlead of a big eye splice cut into half at the end
of its eye can give you what you want in a single rope; it will
be eyespliced up high, and again on each end (with either the
Stopper-knot terminations beneath the seat as your image shows,
or an uncut eye through the seat (rope run down through one
hole & back up through the other, then spliced).
(Oh, btw/FYI, the joints in your image are eye splices (though it
raises a philosophical/definitional issue at the seat since they do
not actually make "eyes").)

I should remark that the splices could be bowlines, which you'll
find more easily made & adjusted; these knots will wear less well,
and ideally should have their ends seized (bound to an adjoining
part of the structure (e.g., to an eye leg) with small cord, by
making lots of tight wraps and tying off).

Now, if for some reason one actually must (or really wants to) use
three ropes, ideally the single one into which the two from-seat-side
ropes will fuse will be thicker, and there is a way to effectively
splice the two into the one such that pairs of strands from the
two will act as single strands married into the thicker single
strands.  (Keeping in mind, too, that this is a just a swing,
after all, and even with the obesity of Modern Man there won't
be that much force on the cordage!)

Realize that if the from-seat-sides ropes do merge, then they
will be pinching the swinger a little, depending upon how high
above the seat this union comes.
