Trailer made with cord.
« on: July 18, 2005, 10:24:06 PM »
A friend showed me a magazine article about a bike trailer made with some sticks and string. I have been trying to get a direct link, but I can not get it to work. So it is a "do it yourself" link this time.

Go to  http://www.carryfreedom.com/  click on products in the heading of the page you see now, and at the bottom of the next text you see in red Bamboo Trailer, click on that.

Now you have to choose between downloading the article about the trailer. (DO is good reading,) or getting in touch to get the instructions, (I have not done that yet, but it is probably worth it,) or both.

Hi Willeke, I tried the link and got nothing... Which is O.K.  Why I signed on is that I live 7 miles from a bamboo plantation.  I don't grow the stuff... nasty weed that takes over your property and can't be killed... we get over 100" of rain and that stuff grows and grows and grows.  Well heavy things cost too much to ship but dried bamboo is very light so if someone wants bamboo I think Blue Herron Farm or I could ship some.  I've never looked at my neighbors web site but I bet they have one... of course they are selling bamboo starts and such about propigation.  It is pretty neat stuff if it isn't in your lawn.

Roy,
Thanks for the offer, but bamboo is available from gardencenters everywhere in the western world, so it is not hard to get hold of. The beauty of this trailer is that all you need is some sticks, rods, tubes or alike. 4 as long as you need the trailer to be, to as long as you need the trailer to be wide, one to connect the structure to the bike (or you push or pull it by hand,) and the last one is somewhere in the middle, just up in the air it seems and gives the structure it strength. Oh, yes, you need 2 wheels too and their axles and a way to fix them onto the trailer.

In the pictures they used green/fresh sticks, and wheels like bicycle wheels.

But the aim of this publication is giving the poor people in poor countries a way to transport a lot for little money and without having to use machinery or having to buy expencive parts. (Every blacksmith in countries like that which is worth the name will be able to make the fixtures for the wheels.)

Willeke,

Thank you for posting this site. This wagon is a great application for trying out our ideas for and skills in rope-lashing construction.

I couldn't help but remember the reconstructed suspension system in the Wetwang Chariot: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/lj/archaeologylj/wetwang_entry.shtml .

I always find trying to reproduce or improve upon the ideas and skills of ~2,000 years ago instructing and humbling!  ;D  The wagon is a great starting point.

Brian.

Hi

I am the designer of the bamboo trailer, direct links to our pages should work now.

For the product page:
http://www.carryfreedom.com/body_product.html

For the magazine article
http://www.carryfreedom.com/Downloads_content/Bamboo_VV.pdf

For pictures of a trailer built from Bamboo:
http://www.velovision.co.uk/cgi-bin/show_comments.pl?storynum=725

We did have a script that forced everything to the
home page but we refined it today.

Cheers

Nick

Thank you Nick, it is nice to have the direct links and even more to see the new article with the new photos of the trailer.
