Throw away the furry dice!
« on: October 13, 2008, 09:07:32 PM »
Related to the "Turks Head and Stuff" topic ...

Seeing as my motorhome is taking on a knotty theme, I thought I'd find an alternative to furry dice, which I think have gone out of fashion anyway, and decorated two 2" wooden cubes to hang from the rear view mirror.

Don Burrhus challenged me to make his 176 facet design (176KDB for those of you with the Globe Knot Cookbook), but I whimped out and settled for a 96 facet design, using 4mm cord.

The remaining question is whether to attempt to put "spots" on each side of the cude to mimic dice (perhaps dome-headed stainless steel nails as suggested by Don), or to leave them as they are?

Anyway, I'm attaching a photo of my efforts.

Very nice work!!  I think that you should skip the stainless nails on this pair...  They are too pretty as they are.

Can't wait to try that myself. Great looking work!
Add some rose knots for the dots. ;-)

Looks too good to embellish - rose knots in white or cream cord on a polished plain mahogany cube maybe? Beyond me but sounds nice!

Barry

PS "Knots Made Easy" is a great DVD - strongly recommend it.

Thanks for the recommendation for the DVD, Barry - I hope you're enjoying it and finding new, exciting stuff to experiment with.

"Beyond me" - not sure whether you mean the rose knots or the cubes?

If anyone thinks covering cubes is difficult ... well, sure, there are the usual considerations of how much cord to use, how to tighten evenly etc., but Don's "Globe Knot Cookbook" is much easier to follow than a lot of books - I'd say "Give it a try" and see how you get on. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Good luck!
