I know "Sooper Spook" (Ballard) discovered some extraordinarily well-preserved Phoenician ships some time back, and a post at the "Rum Ration" forum (RN Veterans) alluded to the fact that there were also found intact ropes, rigging, nettings and.... knots.
Not so much as a twinkle can I find on this thru Google or Jeeves, so was hoping someone here might have some information on or a link to any articles about this.
I'd be very interested to see how they rigged ship, what knots they used and the similarities/differences from what we'd use now.
When the Mary Rose was "excavated", as I understand, the rope and knots found aboard were almost identical to those being taught today...
Given that there are only so many ways to make a practical knot and have it be useful, I wonder what knots the Phoenicians used?
