Title: ABoK #1692
Post by: mainebingo on September 20, 2020, 02:48:59 PM
I can't get to the third picture of #1692 following Ashley's directions. Is anyone able to give some clarifying instructions on how to do it?

From the second picture go behind and to the right, then in front weave under the right bight leg, over the center strand and finally under the left bight leg.
Hope that helped.

Perhaps I am overthinking it, but my reading of these instructions:

" ..if worked tight as in the second diagram, will make a very satisfactory snug hitch...If tied slackly with a long end, the standing part may be pulled until a third turn appears around the spar...that is quite symmetrical on the back as on the front."

is that the second diagram is a completed knot and you could somehow get to the third diagram
by merely playing with the standing end without any further weaves or passes as you have described.

Well, YMMV per playing and cordage and phase
of the moon.
The rightmost image is not good; it should show
the SPart leading BEHIND spar and up to center &
left side, with a bit of the final, right-side turn &
hitch perspicuous.  (That Ashely was part artist
doesn't mean that he was a good artist!)

Thanks for taking a look at this for me, Dan. It was driving me bonkers trying to figure it out.
