Title: Question: how to tie ABOK 3792 (cabbage net / shot net / treasure net)
Post by: wolever on August 13, 2018, 02:59:51 AM
Hey!

I've been trying to figure out how to tie ABOK 3792, the "cabbage net", but I'm at a total loss; I can't figure out how the different parts connect together, or even how the rope (or ropes?) flow through the knot.

Here's the relevant image and description (and please let me know if this isn't kosher; this is my first post :) ):

And my best attempt, using Chinese Crowns to attach the "mesh" lines to the "rectangle" loops:

Not only was that slow to tie, though (the Chinese Crown is pretty, but not exactly speedy), but when I tried to introduce the second level of mesh, it was incredibly hard to get the "cross" sections (that is, the space in between the "rectangle" loops where the mesh lines cross) the right length.

I love the look of this knot, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi wolever and welcome,
How do you try to introduce the second level?
If, as I suppose, you want to use the light blue rope, you have to form a bight with the light blue rope between 2 golden rope bights (please look carefully at the picture by Ashley: between 2 golden rope bights there are net knots starting from the second level). When you finish the first level you have to join the 2 light blue ends (and so you start the second level) and go ahead with the second level: 2 knots light-blue/golden, 1 knot light-blue/light-blue, 2 knots ..., 1 knot ...etc...etc..).
I don't know if you have trouble for the torsion of the golden bight too.
You should choose another net knot for the light-blue/light-blue join.
Hope this helps.
Ciao,
s.

As shown this net is made using one strand .
Instead of using a separate grommet I used the
grommet start (https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/pineapple/the-grommet-start-for-net-bags-t1715.html)
I tied 5 loops into the grommet and tied the ends together to make the 6th loop.
I tied 2 knots into each of the original 6 loops to form meshes as shown.
At the end of eash row I tied the ends together
This is a very tedious net to tie.  Please excuse the out of focus camera.  It is old and sometimes refuses to cooperate.

Another attempt

As I mentioned this net is very tedious (and fiddly) to tie.

A simple and mucheasier approach is to use the grommet start .  You can begin with as many meshes as desired and add meshes as the circumference grows to keep the net flat.  Here the two ends need to be tied together to complete the second row.
