Title: Help me ID this Bend/Loop
Post by: IPAtch on September 08, 2013, 03:07:03 AM
I have been working on bends lately, and decided to try an alternative approach to the Zepplin family of bends. Instead of interlocking overhands, I tried different formats and wound up with a bend made of interlocked Italian/Munter hitches.

Simply put, it is just that, interlocked Italian/Munter hitches, with variations that depend on the side which the bitter end finishes on. The one illustrated has the bitter ends on the outside of the knot, which I would guess to be the strongest form. Tracing the ends back through the body of the knot creates interlocked cows hitches. This bend can also be made into a loop, which is interesting on its own, as it does not require an overhead bend in the standing part of the line. The structure of the knot reminds me of a Japanese Bend (ABOK 1423) and the similar loop (ABOK 1032) in how they are tied, but the form is different, and seems to resist jamming much like the Zepplin does.

I created an illustration of how to tie it. Unfortunately, I made a mistake in ordering the illustration, and on top of that it was made quickly and really is not very good. Note that the very bottom picture is the finished bend, the other four should be viewed starting at the top left and then clockwise. If this proves to be a problem, I will redo the whole thing when I have some more time later this week.

Now to the point, does any one know what this knot is? I couldn't find the bend or loop in ABOK, and keyword searches such as munter hitch bend, italian joining knot, cows hitch bend, etc, came up with nothing helpful. I do not expect something this basic is new, as most new knots are a tuck or two away from a well known "base" knot, and this knot appears to be a "base" knot, so I decided to post it here. Thanks.

I have looked into prcisely this before.  The knots formed are a carrick bend, a carrick x bend (so i have heard it called), and a misloaded carrick bend.  Interlocked cow hitches also forms a good knot, as do zigzag knots, but they are very bulky.  I consider a zepplin to be made of munter hithces as well, since that is the binding mechanism of the knot, just tied around the tails.

Interesting, when I splay out the knot, you are right, it is a carrick. Now that I think about it, I have tied and dressed a carrick to look just like what I posted, even noting to myself that it was just two interlocked munters, but didn't put it all together until now. Thanks!
