I’m a retired engineer, and environmentalist, and am passionate about marine conservation and recycling. As well as using knots and splices for practical purposes, it gives me great pleasure to recover rope and string from the shore line and to recycle it into what Clifford Ashley calls ‘fancy knot work’. To this end I’m also indebted to Des Pawson for his books which over the years have been an inspiration and guide – I think everybody who knows me has a recycled ‘key ring’, made using the single then doubled Lanyard knot, which fittingly is the startof my own dragonfly!
