International Guild of Knot Tyers

Robert Birch

Robert has been tying and teaching practical knots for more than 50 years, mostly on land and sometimes on the water. In his professional life he served as a scientist, a professor in plant and microbial molecular biology. Recently he has learned with, and taught knots to, men and women who need to tie and use knots under demanding conditions to preserve life and property. In knotting, as in any field, teaching shows how much there is still to learn, and how important it is to find clear terms that respect, wherever possible, established uses in the art.
