Ball end whisk knot?
« on: October 07, 2016, 07:17:43 AM »
Hello folks,
I saw this ball ended sailors whisk on the Chatham Dockyard page. Does anyone know what knot this is? All the whisks I've seen have a hanging loop except this one. There was no credit with the picture.

Welcome to the Forum Marky. The knot you show looks like a Tack Knot (Ashley #846). Sometimes called a Manrope Knot it is made by unlaying 3 strands, tying a wall knot then a crown knot on top, follow round the wall then the crown which brings the strands pointing downwards.

To add to Sweeney's comment, these whisk knots work best when tied with a line that has a stiff fiber.  I have seen them done with Manila rope, like what your photo looks like it was tied with.  I have also thought about using polypropylene line, which gives me an idea for a project the next time I am beach-coming and find some lost piece of line that has floated in with the tide.

Are you sure that this image came from the Chatham Dockyard website?

Tied with 1/4" poly rope. Manrope knot.  3" long.
