Handle Hitch knot
« on: April 19, 2014, 11:25:45 PM »
If you've ever tried to pull hard on thin rope (maybe to tighten slack in a line), you've probably wrapped the rope around your hand and felt it dig in as it constricted around your fingers.

Here's a knot that solves the problem - I call it the Handle Hitch. I couldn't find it anywhere else - if you've heard of it and it has a name, I'd love to know. Or if there's a better alternative, please tell! :)

With slippery rope (i.e.: paracord), it isn't suitable for massive loads due to its similarity to the sheepshank. However, it unquestionably improves your ability to grip a line.

Interesting - thanks for pointing that out. With one or two wraps, the fattened sheepshank seems to still apply the majority of the pressure onto one strand (and doesn't distribute the load that much). When you expand it to 6 or 7 wraps, it starts to become ungainly.

However, doubling up the bight in the overhand loop is a great idea.

So on the stage where you pull out a bight to wrap around - if you pull it a bit longer, you can double it back on itself. Then, wrap the overhand loop around the (now 4 instead of 2) strands. With this adjustment, I was able to hold my weight with paracord without the sheepshank portion spilling.

Whether better, you can decide on your own,
but an old rockclimber's tie-in knot will solve
this problem : bowline on a coil --you make
a coil, cast a nipping loop up into/around the
coil, reeve the tail through this and around
the SPart appropriately, and ... it transforms
into a sort of mega-Portuguese bowline.
cf. www.wilderness-survival.net/mountain-climbing/roped-climbing
among other on-line sources.
