Retraced overhand bend
Bob Thrun:
I posted this in reply to a question on a caving website. It is appropriate here too.
There is a right way and a wrong way to tie the knot called the retraced overhand bend, ring bend, or water knot in rope. I am posting pictures of the right way, the wrong way, and the top and botom views of how the wrong way can distort. This knot is commonly used for webbing, for which there is only one way of tying. It is called the tape knot with webbing.

I avoid this knot in either form, but, other than initial geometry, what usually makes the distorted forms more likely to emerge? Also, are these distorted forms merely ugly, or do they pose a security issue in your opinion?
knot4u:
The correct form is distinct in that the retrace sort of goes behind the overhand knot of the other rope. That provides more leverage and prevents the distorted forms. That's a big difference just because of the dressings, thanks Bob!
However, I'd prefer a Fisherman's Knot in rope where a Water Knot would otherwise be tied. A Fisherman's knot is nearly identical in size, easier for me to get right, and (probably) more secure and stronger. I'd prefer the Water Knot (aka, Tape Knot) for webbing.
Bob Thrun:
The "wrong" (Is there a better term?) form of the knot is liable to distort if there is some torsion in the standing parts while the knot is being tightened. I suspect the wrong form is weaker, but without some tests we really do not know. My main reason for avoiding it is that the distorted form is ugly.

We use that knot (water knot) with webbing. Often use it as an anchor point, wrap 3 pull 2 for example, for a main line.
