To bump or not to bump

Why would bumping be used in place of linking to a relevant thread?
WebAdmin:
Hi Roo,
To clarify my view of the situation:
I have no problem with someone resurrecting an old thread if they have directly relevant new information for it. If someone wants to watch a development in cordage for 3 years, then it is up to them to keep a diary entry to remind them to resurrect it in 3 years. Links are an equal way of resurrecting a thread, but if you are wanting to quote pieces of posts, then resurrecting is probably better for context.
Keeping a topic open by constantly posting trivial comments isn't welcome. I understand this is what bumping is, but I did not consider it to be the method suggested in the post which caused you concern originally.
Stickies are there for a reason. The posts I have stickied have reasons of trying to garner opinions, and thanking those who display great courtesy in their posts. There is also one which contains information about suppliers, which was updated after a reasonable period.
Regards
Glenys

Here is the offending bump in its entirety:
I think that this inSIGHT is worth a 3-years-later bump.
(Which is implicitly a remark about what has/hasN'T
transpired of like significance in the interim, alas.)
Some of current interest in the forum weren't here, then.
How is that not a trivial comment? There is no content being added. There is no "directly relevant new information", to use your own words. He is not asking someone to answer an unanswered question. This is textbook bumpspam.
If he can do it, can I?
P.S. Notice that I quoted pieces of a another thread, and it in no way required bumping.

Hi Roo,
Too many late nights and distractions have caught me out: I didn't notice that Dan had already resurrected the thread, just that he was saying about 3 years. I took him to mean it was a new thread to be followed up in 3 years. I'm sorry.
However, he has raised awareness of an issue with safety of a particular cordage, and as a result a promising thread looks like developing. Shall we see how it goes without further reference to it's Rip Van Winkleness?
Congratulations on being able to quote from other threads. I have never been able to figure out how to do that, and have become quite used to doing it the old-fashioned way.
As regards your request for permission to bump threads, you wouldn't encourage a bumpwar (I believe that was the phrase you used) just because somebody else resurrected a thread. You asked for reasons why bumping would be used in place of linking. I gave my view on it, and I have no doubt that you will lead with the best example of behaviour in accordance with that.
Since Dan's tipping of the milk-bottle resulted in only a splash, and I'm sure he is now aware of this discussion, I don't think anything more needs to be said on the subject at all. Dan doesn't make a habit of resurrecting threads, so I'm sure he too will consider the criteria I've given as guidance in the future.
It would be appropriate to a spirit of reconciliation, though, if you wouldn't mind deleting your posts referring to bumping. And if anyone else has posted comments about bumping, perhaps they would also delete or edit those out.
The thread can then be restored to a proper subject, and bumping can be left here on the Feedback board.
Thank you for your help in doing that.
Regards
Glenys

If the lack of response was due to a misunderstanding, that's fine, and I appreciate the apology.

My re-direct link to this thread was my attempt to preserve the thread from further off-topic disruption.

I just cut and pasted text. Then I hyperlinked it to the message. For onlookers, you can put a =http//www.etc. after the first "URL" tag created by the "insert hyperlink" icon.
Example: sqbracket URL=http://www.google.com endsquarebracket
Although just cutting and pasting the URL works too if you don't need text linked inline.

Agreed (hopefully).

I've left a re-direct link to this thread to prevent further detours. I'll leave matters to the moderators to delete the bad example of Dan's bump post and the various responses to the bumping issue. It'll likely be cleaner that way.
