Spanish Ring Knot
« on: January 10, 2005, 03:24:10 PM »
In Ron Edwards' "Turk's Heads" (a splendid book) he mentions, on page 36, the "Spanish Ring Knot".  Does anyone know what this is?  It would be good to have something other than a TH to cover gaps etc.

Am I right in thinking that you can't make a 4-lead Turks Head?

Check out the chapter in ABOK on Turks Heads.  There is a chart in there on what Turks Heads can be tied with a single line.  A four lead Turks Head can be tied, and increased, with both 3 bights, and 5 bights.

Just an update on the Spanish Ring Knot:

Bud's great tut on KHWW:

Tim's thread on his awesome Grid Maker where the Spanish Ring Knot is discussed:

I looked at Bud's tutorials and looked at the one titled Weaving the Spanish Ring Knot. If you look close he ties a 3 x 5 in hand first. Then he expands that with a type 2 expansion. As you know, you told me you read Tom Hall's book, expanding a 3 x 5 by following along the left side of the standing part you get a 7 x 11 knot. So in the grid maker type in 7 parts by 5 bights. A Spanish ring knot is a gaucho weave and a 7 x 11 will have an over 3 under 3 coding. The instructions will be given by half cycle like you were going to braid the knot on a mandrel.

Here is the link to the knot.

Hi Diana,

This was one of the subjects we covered, at a Solent Branch meeting, you must have been at sea that week.

You must have picked up on the vibes, I have been practising recently for the summer season of shows, I will show you on Tuesday if you make our meeting.

If not, to answer your question it starts with a five part by three TH, then you break out of the regular rythem of a TH and with some maths weave like a twill.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your response - I am in the USA again with Nicky so can't make the meeting I'm afraid - I hope to see you all again in the autumn ("Fall" for those over here ...) and look forward to some tuition.  It's bakingly hot and we're about to take everyone swiimming.

all the best,

Diana.

Hi

As stormdrane writes in his blog:

Go to the amazon link and use the "look inside" feature to find the diagram for the Spanish Ring Knot.
