Info on car knots
« on: May 01, 2011, 10:04:24 AM »
These knots could possibly be practical or functional, but I believe they are more suited in the decorative section. From "Hogan's Heroes", season 2 episode 3, these images are taken. and I wonder if there is more light to be shed on the knots shown.

Not being a car enthusiast, I don't know what make, model or year the car is. But in it, just behind the front seats, hang handles for the back seat passengers to grab. Also, there is some sort of ornament by the back seat. It is only briefly showing and I didn't manage to get a better image of it.

Any information would be great.

The car looks like a 1930s Mercedes Benz - a similar car though not identical is pictured at
http://wallpaperstock.net/mercedes-1930_wallpapers_8581_1024x768_1.html - I wouldn't be surprised to find that the grab handles were a standard fitting Mercedes being a cut above the rest (except Rolls Royce of course!).

Thanks. I believe that could be the one. Now I know what to look for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_770

Finding a museum that stocks one of these, is of course another matter. And getting a closer look at the knotwork, will most likely be even trickier.

I'm not sure what the car was but I took a photo of almost an exact match to the knotted grip as show above when i was in Maldon, Victoria in south east Australia.  There was a small motor museum that had the car with the knotted work.

Great! Would you care to share the picture? At this point, I don't know what to do of it. So far, I am just very intrigued by the knot. I might do a clone/copy of the knot someday.

Thanks! The likeness is very good. The webbing around the knob seems to be diagonal in the car in Hogan's heroes, while straight in the photograph. Hard to tell due to the poor quality in the screendump. I'm very grateful.

The car was at a museum in Maldon in Victoria, Australia. I could contact them to find out the car manufacturer and history if you like.

That museum was listed here: http://www.carscene.com.au/tipstricks/museums.htm

But there was no website or e-mail address. The car is secondary to the knot. But then, it would be valuable to know what car belongs to the knotwork. Details on the knot would be much appreciated of course. Material, dimensions, fitting. Close up photos would be invaluable of course. If the specific knot is original to the car and what the core bulb is made of and fastened.

I would appreciate contact with the museum if you don't mind. I guess it would be a slow dialogue from here. An e-mail address wouldn't be bad at all.

I was thinking of this thread the other day. The last image shows a large variation. That surprises me. Now I wonder which car manufacturer used them, and if a specific knot went into a specific car.

My topmost picture is a assist pull from a 1938 Packard/Super 8 that I extracted from a movie.
The second is from a Mercedes.
Third is from a museum (Nethercutt).

I think quite a few manufacturers from the earlier days used rope and leather braiding/knotwork for the robe rails, grabs and assists.

There is no official list to match model and make of cars to a certain set of knotwork, is there?

... no, I don't think I will start on such a thing. It just seem to me there is a huge amount of professions, that go entirely unnoticed.

Was (is?) there workshops in which tyers made these pulls? Was it maybe the chore of housewifes or children to tie them after hours as extra income? Was there a description/recipe/specification for tying these pulls? Like the blazon of heraldry?

Would it be plagiarism to copy an original, or false to try to fit your own creation in a vintage car?

I would think you'd have to venture into the vintage car forums to ask around.
The history of the making of them would be great to learn. If you find something let me know
please.

Plagiarism, I don't think so. There are reproduction parts companies in almost every field of restoration and I don;'t know that they all have special permission.

Here's a link for a pull for a Rolls. http://passementeries.com/warp/items/assistpull.htm
They make "heirloom restoration" pieces.
