The Wide Zipper Sinnet - A TIAT Prototype (Fusion) Knot
« on: April 16, 2010, 03:58:49 PM »
For some time now, I've been developing new paracord ties through
the integration of different knot elements and knot tying techniques
(Fusion Knotting).  The River Bar is an example of this effort.

Furthering my efforts, I've been attempting to generate a wide, or
"thickened", version of the Zipper Sinnet.

Coupling the technique used to create the Wide Solomon Bar with a
slight modification of the Zipper Sinnet, I created the following prototype.

Its design is still in development, still its name is fixed. I'm calling it the
"Wide Zipper Sinnet".

Video instructions soon to follow (to be posted on the Fancy Knotwork
Tutorials page)

The zipper sinnet is the same as the Chinese phoenix tail knot (http://www.mresource.com/fiber/coepart2/phoenixknot.htm).  The "big" phoenix tail knot is a 4 strand version of the same
.
I've posted some quick instructions here (http://www.chineseknotting.org/sinnet/phoenix-tail-big/).  Inspired by your post, I experimented with widening it further to a 6 strand

Different from your wide zipper though.  I look forward to the instructions.

The "Big" Phoenix Tail is different from the Wide Zipper Sinnet,
still the Phoenix Tail is really pretty.

I'll definitely be taking a closer look at that!

Thank you so much for posting.

Just to be clear, the (4 strand) big phoenix tail is a standard, if only occasionally published, expansion of the 2 strand phoenix tail.  My 6 strand version is a logical expansion of the patterns established by the 2 and 4 strand versions.

So, when's your Fusion Knotting book going to be available?  Do you have a set table of contents we can see?  8)

The bulk of the knots in the book are those I presented and created over the course of 2008 through 2009.

My second knot book (working on now) will cover what you've seen me produce since the start of this year (heavy focus of Paracord ties and innovative designs such as the Honey Basket - single rope basket). Plus ties that will only be presented in the book (I can't show you everything - smile).

Looks good (and substantial 8).  Have you thought of doing a e-book or iPad/iPhone app so that you could combine the step by step with the videos into a single work?  I was working towards a hybrid book/CD/DVD document before the larger ebook reader iPad format became available...

Looking good JD.  It will be great to have a new knotting book on the market, with lots of new knots in it - so many other knotting books just re-shuffle knots already described in existing books.

As regards KnotMe's iPhone app suggestion, I understand Ian Fieggen of Ian's Shoelaces became a millionaire (at least, I believe he has sold more than a million apps) when he produced an iPhone app.  I doubt you'll do that well but...

I was one of those giving Ian $$.  I was disappointed because I had essentially purchased it based on Ian's name alone and had done no investigating or I would have known that it was lacing patterns and didn't have his namesake knot or any of the other shoelace knots I was expecting.

But the lesson here is if you can make something and hit people's "yeah, I'll pay $0.99 for that" a million times versus a cool and deeply considered "I'll pay $25 for that book" 2000 times....

Of course, if you can somehow bypass people's purchase discrimination circuits and get the "yeah, I'll buy that" without the "... wait, how much?" then you're Blizzard (http://www.onlinemassivelymultiplayer.com/mmo-news/wow-celestial-steed-sells-over-3-5-million-in-24-hours-hd-gameplay-video/)

Most of my knotting career has been, "Here you go, its free."

Probably why I still have a day job...

I wonder if anyone ever thought that one day you could give away a computer game for free, then make your money selling virtual things for a virtual world.  I also wonder whether anyone anticipated how much kids would use mobile phones for texting.    I read today that a third of teenagers with phones send over 100 text messages A DAY.

That JD is why I got started in recreational knotting and why when I have the $ I will be purchasing all of your books and will make every effort to attend one of your classes (if you are still doing them...Make it easy on me come to Austin) Your generosity and love for knots is IMO why so many are fans of 2KB
thank you my life was literally changed when I ran across your old account before youtube shut you down
