Pyrocord?

Brian Grimley:
PABPRES - I thought I was radical when I tied one of the Chinese knots in a rainbow coloured rattail. You leave me in the dust, Dude!

KnotNow!:
What is "rattail"?  Bob, in Ohio, sent me some "rainbow" cord, I call the size "masons cord" but I would guess it is three strand at about 1mm.  I haven't yet gotten the guts to use it.  I've used miles of the cotton masons cord and the more recent neon and "golden" masons cord.  When I get "digital"  I'll try to post some jpegs.  It must be an ageing process for me.  If it would glow in the dark I'd knot it..... OH!  There is a "3-M", you know the "Scotch Tape" people in USA?  They make a product called "ScotchLite" (with my appologies to the folks from Scotland).  This stuff is used on safety vests for workers in traffic and all sorts of important stuff.  Kelty (a manufacturer of camping stuff) took some "Scotchlite" and some Kevlar and made "Triplite" cord.  When you shine the automobile head lamps or a flashlight (torch to you?) on it  the reflection is a very high percentage and the stuff is like a lightning bolt.  My walking staff has two turk's heads and cars veer away, thinking it is some huge tiger in the road.  If I drop my key the key guard shines from any light, even the backwash from my own headlights.  I got the stuff from EMS in USA.  The Kevlar protects the Scotslite so it lasts many abusive years as a key guard or THK.

Sorry, I couldn't find how to edit my Post ???.   The bright stuff is called "Triptease", not "triplite".  I've used over 50' of it, if you consider how many small items that is!  If you "photo" it in the semi-dark it is so intense a reflection that the rest of the photo is supressed.
Don't talk about cost! It was more expensive than the 7/8" line in "the cross". :P  For folks who walk on the road with Phideaux at night or who drop the keys to the RR at the club..... cost isn't everything. :D

Brian Grimley:
PABPRES - I only post the following sites to show "rattail".  I have not done business with them.

Rattail is a little floppy and synthetic. Rayonish?

I picked up a piece of impressive Chinese Knotting at a second hand bookstore. It was tied in a material that, I think technically, would be called gimp. In structure, it is like paracord and made with cotton rather than nylon. Unlike paracord, this gimp, has a very tight weave and firm lay. The  traditional Chinese Knotting tied with this gimp, although tied tightly, has a beautiful "open" structure. I would love to find a source of this material!

Ciao - Brian.

Ps. If you are interested, I uploaded a .jpg of the Rainbow Rattail Chinese Knot to BGKnot's album on khww. The album is in category: "Other Galleries"

Thanks Brian,  Just when I think I've seen everything a whole product line comes to hand!  I live in geographic isolation and aparently in mental isolation as well.  Thanks to IGKT I now can explore "gimp" and "rattail" as two materials I've never tied.  Some of the fun is adapting ones style to materials that just won't behave the way our favorite cord does. 8)
