Pyrocord?

(1/3) > >>

drjbrennan:
I've just been reading a book I bought on eBay called "Braiding and knotting".
It is a handicraft guide published by popular mechanics magazine for the U.S armed forces, and it looks 1950s ish.
It is a short project guide to making lanyards, belts and bracelets using gimp (boondoggle) or string.

Now heres the funny bit: it also suggests using PYROCORD.

I did some googling and pyrocord is a type of propellant/explosive in a wire or cord form composed of platinum, aluminum and cordite, used for setting off other explosives, like a fuse.

Can this be right?  Does anybody here know can pyrocord be used as a braiding material?

bazz:
Hi there,
I think the cord you are looking for is "Paracord", of the non explosive kind, you can find it here:

Happy knotting,
Barry ;)

drjbrennan:
It must be a typo.
Thanks for the link, by the way, is there a UK based supplier of paracord in these colours?

bazz:
If there was I would be a happy man.

I have not found a supplier in the U.K. that sells this cord and the customs charges make it an expensive proposition to buy from the U.S. esspecialy if you are after a lot  :(

As always the grass seems to be much greener on the other side of the pond.

here is a link to KJK ropeworks, they have some colours in polyprop line (not nylon), but not the range of colours U-Braid it has

http://www.kjkropeworks.co.uk/~kjkropeworks.co.uk/public_html/cords/index.html

If anyone out there knows a U.K. supplier of nylon paracord I would also like to know Please.

Take care,
Barry ;)

KnotNow!:
I am so glad to find a lead on para cord.  I love the stuff and make many items (bell ropes, key guards, yadda.).   Pyrocord (called detcord up here) is something very different.  The link took me to some wonderful colors (colours).  The stuff I use most is US military specification, which was seven cord core and a braided ovrermantle.  If it gets too "wimpy" and the overmantle colapses on the core if the manufacturer reduces the core...but I'll order up some and let you know if I can  tie really tight knots that I love.
