spam email received

<< < (2/2)

Webmistress:
Although I did not receive the spam in question, I have seen a copy of it. It is a standard piece of advance fee fraud commonly referred to as a "419" or "Nigerian Letter".

The spammers obtain the target email addresses from anywhere they can - the Web, mailing lists, existing bulk email address lists. The list is endless and it is almost impossible to pinpoint any one source. Whilst complaints can be made to the mail provider at the sending address (most commonly Yahoo), most of the time, the offending address has already been removed and the spammer has moved onto a different address.

However, this morning I did some investigating and discovered that the news feed for the forum has been including the email addresses of some forum members. I consider this to be a significant security bug within Simple Machine and it has been brought to their attention. Whilst it should be fixed in the next upgrade, I have already implemented a fix which will ensure that all email addresses are removed from the news feed.

I apologise for any inconvenience this has caused. All I can say is that the issue appears to be specific to the current version of Simple Machine and has only recently been discovered within 1 of the 70 scripts that, effectively, run the entire forum. The developers have been duly rapped across the knuckes.

skyout:
Thanks for the update and everything you're doing to keep the site safe! 8)

deckhandiana:
Yes, thanks from me, too.

Diana.

Phil_The_Rope:
Yes, thanks from me too (even though I've not experienced this particular problem YET).

I run a small forum for my local cricket club (for you North American folks, cricket is a little like baseball. but demands more skill and knowledge of complicated rules), and I know how time consuming it can be sorting out these annoyances, so please be patient with our webmistress, who must get driven nuts by these people whose only aim in life seems to be to spoil everyone else's enjoyment.

Come the revolution, all the spammers and hackers will be lined up against the wall and shot! I'm happy to pull the trigger if you're not!

And I repeat my offer to give spammers a demonstration of my knotting knowledge! I intend to use a knot with nine round turns, "because even if a man has as many lives as a cat, there is a full turn for each of them"...
